After my previous fight I was offered another match on a new big production show Destiny 1. This show was awesome to be on, the crowd was the biggest had fought in front and the set up was really cool with a long walk out runway and lights and smoke machines, it was the first time i’d experienced this kind of a walk out.
During the lead up in fight camp for this one, I was also dealing with my father undergoing chemo therapy, he had been diagnosed 8 months earlier with an aggressive blood Cancer, Leukemia. On the night of this fight, I also ended up having to take my precious kitty to the emergency vet hospital (for those who know me, know how much I adored my cat), he was extremely sick with a heart condition and I had to leave him at the emergncy vet in an oxygen chamber. I was gutted, but knew I had to try and push past these things in my mind.
To push myself through fight camp and also whilst warming up before my fight, I told myself that this fight was NOTHING compared to the fight my dad was putting up every day. So for this fight, I tried my hardest to push everything that was going on in my personal life aside and just fight.
Sam Ernst (nee Sam Jenkins) is a strong fighter and this was tough fight. She has a mean right hand on her and landed it quite a lot during the first two rounds. Then in first 2 seconds of the third it landed right on the money, which knocked me down to my hands and knees, even though I sprang straight back up and was ready to go, as per WBC rules, due to the fact that 3 parts of my body touched the canvas at the same time, the ref had to put an 8 count on me regardless.
So this fight ended in us getting a draw, as I didn’t know much about the scoring process in WBC at the time, Riddler, explain it to me on how WBC came to a draw on this one. The score card was 10-9, 10-9 in my favour for round 1 & 2, but because of the 8 count in the 3rd it made the score 8-10 for round 3, when added up this made the final score 28-28, giving us a draw.
When I reflected back on the fight, I had to laugh, I tend to think the most random things when i’m fighting, in this one I can remember thinking, “her perfume smells nice” (when we were clinching) – haha I mean, really, who thinks that in the midst of a fight? haha, this weirdo does!
I enjoyed this fight, it taught me that I can push through even with a bunch of yucky things going on in my personal life. That I can draw from the negative and use it to motivate me to go harder!
